WALX Guide Training

Overview _ please note this course is NOT available to book unless sponsored by an INSTRUCTOR who has notified us in advance

NWUK WALK Leaders (WALX Guides) are trained to plan routes and lead them safely. They do not teach any technique but are able to understand the medical screening, technique training, correct intensity and risk assessment process in order to lead walks safely. With appropriate insurance and First aid they can lead walks on their own but often they assist Instructors with group management. They play a vitally important role within groups by helping with planning, social events and motivation. As they can lead those suitably trained and screened on a range of walks, this allows the Instructor to concentrate on teaching and exercise drills. This training is only available to those SPONSORED by an Active NWUK Instructor or WALX Master. Access to further CPD modules is also provided for leaders who wish to lead some specific sessions such as Speedhyking, Yoga etc *

Content

The virtual element of the training includes the following modules which are conducted by group webinars – total time circa 4 hours

  1. Pole and Technique Basics: understand the different types of poles available so you can help other walkers choose the right poles for them; lead a warm up routine; understand the key technique movements so you can work with your instructor to ensure everyone is getting the most from their poles; lead a stretch routine [1h20]
  2. Choosing Locations: understand the key considerations when finding new routes for walkers; understand the principles of risk assessment so you can safely implement walks and apply your instructor’s risk assessment [1h45]
  3. Client Health: feel comfortable when you have people on your walks who have medical conditions; know how to adapt a walk to ensure walkers are exercising at the right level for them [45mins]
  4. Planning Your Sessions: plan routes to ensure everyone walks at the pace that is right for them; manage groups effectively on a walk [40mins]

Format

  • 4 virtual sessions supported by online learning and sign off by your local Instructor or an appointed  Regional representative.

Assessment

Your lead instructor will be provided with the tools to ensure you understand how their local practices fit into the wider framework developed by Nordic Walking UK/WALX. They will be able to support you when learning the practical skills of warm up, leading a group and stretching. You will lead a walk under their supervision to ensure you are happy and feel ready to lead a walk – there’s no rush; you can build your skills and confidence at your own speed

Testimonial –

I especially liked the fact that I really felt part of the national community of instructors and leaders and that the Tutor (Denise) was brilliant at bringing it all alive.
